يتتبع هذا الكتاب رحلة (فِلْبِي) في مرتفعات الجزيرة العربية للفترة (السبت 5 – الخميس 17 شوَّال 1355 ه = 19 – 31 ديسمبر 1936 م) وهو كتابٌ تاريخيٌ، جغرافيٌ، لُغويٌ، ثقافيٌ. ومؤلفه هو "هاري سانت جون بريدجر فِلْبِي وُلد في مكانٍ يُسمَّى (سانت جون)، بـ (سيلان/سريلانكا) (1885) وتوفي في بيروت (1960)، وكان قد أعلن عن اعتناقه الإسلام.قام فِلْبِي برحلاته واستكشافاته في الجزيرة العربية، فكان أول رحَّالة زار جبال (فَيْفاء) و(بني مالك) ولم يسبقه أحدٌ إلى ذلك قطّ، لا من (العرب) ولا من (الغرب) ولا من سِواهم، بمَن في ذلك الهمداني (280 – 345هـ).يشتمل هذا الكتابُ ترجمة لـ أ.د/ عبد الله بن أحمد الفَيْفي لفصلين من كتاب "مرتفعات الجزيرة العربية"، للرحالة (فِلْبِي). الأول معنون بـ "جبال تهامة"، وفيه الحديث التفصيلي عن جبال (فَيْفاء) و(بني مالك)، والآخر يتطرَّق إلى "حُدود المرتفعات"، معرِّجا على النقاط الحدودية السعودية اليمنية.
وتأتي أهمية هذا العمل لجُملة أسباب، منها:1- السعي إلى ترجمة تتوخى الصحة والدقة، وتراعي السياقات المعرفية والبيئية للنص المترجم. 2- دراسة أحوال المرتفعات الحدودية السعودية اليمنية في تلك الحقبة التاريخية التي قام فيها (فِلْبِي) برحلته، عام 1355 ه= 1936 م، مع التقصي التحقيقي لما تضمنه النص من معلومات.2- تُعدًّ زيارة (فِلْبِي) لتلك المرتفعات هي الأولى، ولعلها الأخيرة، من نوعها. وهي لمنطقة من أكثر المناطق في (الجزيرة العربية) غموضاً وندرة معلومات.3- يرى المترجم ضرورة أن يتولى أبناء البلدات – التي زارها الرحالة – ترجمة ما كتبوه عنها، وأن ذلك أفضل سبيلٍ إلى إنتاج ترجماتٍ علميَّة، ذات قيمة تاريخية وثقافيَّة.5- تمثل المادة التي تضمنتها هذه الترجمة الهدف الأساس من رحلة (فِلْبِي) عمومَا، وهو ترسيم الحدود بين (السعودية) و(اليمن)، وبتوجيهٍ من الملك عبد العزيز آل سعود.
