في هذا الكتاب يقدم الكاتب العراقي أ.د محمد صابر عبيد مقاربة نقدية حول المتخيل الاستشراقيُّ (الأنا والآخر) في سرديات سلطان بن محمّد القاسميّ عبر ثلاثة محاور هي: الرواية في التاريخ والتاريخ في الرواية، مقاربة الآخر (الرؤية والهوية)، وتمثيلات الأنا والآخر الروائية.
في المقدمة التي افتتح بها المؤلف عمله اعتبر أن: الكاتب سلطان بن محمد القاسميّ في مدوناته كلّها يتمتّع ببروز هدف مركزيّ يؤسس لرؤية تستهدف تفكيك المتخيل الاستشراقيّ في أطروحته الاستعمارية، وقد تمركزت جلّ مؤلفاته في منطقة التاريخ بطبقاته وحساسياته ومتغيراته كلها، وهو يحيل بمعرفة وإدراك وقصديّة على هذه الرؤية ويستنطقها في سياقات كثيرة تعتمد على طبيعة الكتابة، وشكلها، وجنسها، وحساسيتها، وتمثّلاتها، غير أن مدوّنته السردية في مجال السرد الروائي التاريخي هي الأكثر استجابة وتمثّلاً لحساسية هذه الرؤية ومنهجها ورؤيتها.
من هنا يرى المؤلف في مقاربته لـ "مدوّنات القاسميّ الروائية" أن هذه: المدونات اجتهدت في تسخير سردها التاريخيّ للنظر في طبيعة هذا المتخيّل الاستشراقيّ، ورصد تجلّياته، وتمثل مقاصده، وتحليل خطابه، على نحو يعيد إنتاجه ضمن نسق الاستهداف الذي تتعرض له الأمة العربية، بإنسانها وأرضها وعقلها وصورتها الراهنة والقادمة وذاكرتها وحلمها، والعمل على حشد طاقة التنبيه وعلاماته وإشاراته وإسقاطاته نحو تجليات المشروع وخططه وتفاصيله وإلهاماته، والسبل الكفيلة بتفادي سطوته وسلطته وقوّة تأثيره في الجوهر وعلى المحيط، والسعي الحثيث لتوطين مشروع الأمن العربيّ المشترك في سياق مضادّ للمشروع الاستشراقيّ الاستعماريّ، يتعاطى مع فكرة السرد الروائيّ التاريخيّ من أجل التنوير وتفعيل الرؤية القومية على نحو منطقيّ وموضوعيّ ومعقول".
وهكذا عبر فضاء المتخيل الاستشراقي في سرديات سلطان بن محمّد القاسميّ سلط المؤلف الضوء على إشكالية الأنا والآخر ضمن حساسية سردية تعيد إنتاج فكرة الاستشراق، تمهيداً لقرائتها برؤية عميقة وجديدة.
