«لماذا هنا تيار هوائي؟» سأل أستاذ الفيزياء في مدرسة «يوما» المتوسطة التلميذة "ووتونغ" ابنة الحادية عشرة ربيعاً وعندما لم تُجبْ رفع الأستاذ رأسه إلى العريش، ثم نظر إلى فتحتي اليمين واليسار وقال: هذا يُسمى بتأثير النفق الهوائي فعندما تزفر الريح تُسمى «تيار هوائي» وهو المكان الذي لا تطاله الشمس طوال اليوم.. أما عن "النفق الهوائي" في بيت عائلة "ووتونغ" فكان جنة الأطفال الصيفية فهم يلعبون ويمرحون ويضحكون ويقرأون ويشربون الشاي وتكون "ووتونغ" سعيدة جداً بأداء دور المضيفة الصغيرة.. تَعرف "ووتونغ" كل الأطفال الذين يذهبون ويرجعون في قريتها الريفية الجميلة، باستثناء ذلك الصبي الذي بدا أنه ينتقل بين ممرات الحقول؟ لذا فإنها ورفاقها الصغار كانوا يتساءلون في سرهم من هو؟ ولماذا في كل مرة يظهر ويختفي عند ضفة النهر؟
وكان الصبي هو "أوك" الطفل الأقل شعبية في القرية لأن والده يسرق. في الصيف الحار، يستمتع الأطفال الآخرون بالرياح الباردة تحت سقيفة القش، والبلوط.
يقبع "أوك" حزيناً في عالم وحيد وواسع. في حقول الأرز، على ضفة النهر، وعلى جانب البركة، يركض بحرية ويسابق "تيار هوائي" ويصرخ، وكأن العالم المحيط به ينتمي إليه وحده!
والسبب أن القرية سُرقت مراراً وتكراراً، وكان الجميع قد شك بأن "أوك" هو الفاعل. وكان على "أوك" الذي يحترم نفسه إثبات براءته... لم يكن "أوك" هو السارق بل والده.. لقد تحول إلى لص، وندم في وقت لم ينفع فيه الندم.
