يتناول الكتاب ظاهرة الهوى كما يمكن أن تتجسد في صفات يتداولها الناس ويصنّفون بعضهم بعضاً إستناداً إلى ممكناتها في الدلالة والتوقع الإنفعالي؛ فالبخل والغيرة والحقد والحسد والغضب وغيرها من الصفات هي كيانات تعيش بيننا ضمن ما تحدّده "العتبات" التي يقيمها المجتمع ويقيس من خلالها "الفائض الكيفي" في الإنفعال الموجود على جنبات "اعتدال"، هو ذاته ليس سوى صيغة مفترضة لا يتحدّد مضمونه إلاَّ ضمن التقطيعات الثقافية المخصوصة التي يتحقق داخلها هذا الهوى أو ذاك.
إن الهوى ليس عارضاً أو مضافاً أو طارئاً يمكن الإستغناء عنه أو التخلص منه، كما يمكن أن نتوهم ونحن نحتفي بعقلٍ لا يأتيه الباطل من الجهات الأربع، إنه جزء من كينونة الإنسان وجزء من أحكامه وميولاته وتصنيفاته. وبإعتباره كذلك، فقد كان دائماً محط ذم وتحذير وشُبْهة: فلقد رأى فيه البعض "جنوناً يسير ضد العقل" واعتبره البعض الآخر "إنصياع الروح للجسد الذي يداهمها". واعتبره فريق ثالث حصيلة لفوضى تصيب الحواس وتقود العقل إلى الإنهيار والتلاشي أمام رغبات جسد "تستهويه الشهوات وتقوده إلى المعاصي".
