يؤكد هذا الكتاب على مسألة هامة، وهي، أن التقدم العلمي من دون مقاييس أخلاقية لا يجدي نفعاً، لأن الإنسان هو الهدف وليس الآلة. وهذا ما حذر منه علماء كثيرون من أن "السلالة البشرية يمكن أن تُدمّر عبر إنجازاتها العلمية نفسها ما لم تتوافق الثقافة العلمية مع الثقافة الأخلاقية. واقترحوا من أجل بقاء الجنس البشري إلى ما بعد القرن الواحد والعشرين، يجب أن نبحث عن التنوّر من الحكيم الصيني كونفوشيوس".
وبين طيات هذا الكتاب بعضاً من الأمثال الصينية الذهبية من سلالات حاكمة مختلفة تهدف من ورائها إلى معرفة جوهر الثقافة التقليدية للصين ذات الحضارة الممتدة على مدى خمسة آلاف عام. "إنها حكم منورة وملهمة بما تحويه من عناصر الحقائق العالمية. وقد وصلت إلينا من كلاسيكيات صينية قديمة لا تعد ولا تحصى. لا يزال البعض منها معروفاً جيداً...".
تصنف الحكم الواردة في هذا الكتاب تحت ستة عناوين رئيسية: 1 – حول الإرادة، 2 – حول التعلم (يضم هذا القسم أقوالاً مأثورة عن كيفية التدريس، وتقدير الوقت، والعلاقة بين المعرفة والفعل)، 3 – حول تهذيب النفس، 4 – حول العلاقات الإنسانية، 5 – حول الحكمة والاستراتيجية، 6 – حول الحكم.
إن الحكم المختارة في هذا الكتاب هي كنوز للعقل ليس فقط للصينيين بل أيضاً للقراء الأجانب، ولهذا السبب ترجمت هذه الحكم إلى الإنكليزية ومنها إلى العربية بحيث إن المعنى في كل حكمة جاء واضحاً ومفهوماً من دون الغوص في السياق التاريخي.
