هذا الكتاب أحد كتب سلسلة عمارة بكين القديمة، وهو يستعرض أساساً مجمّعات المباني الفخمة والمساكن الأخرى في بكين. ويجمع الكتاب بين النصوص والرسومات والصور الفوتوغرافية بهدف تقديم عرض وتوثيق للمباني الأميرية الفخمة القائمة والمجمّعات ذات الأفنية في بكين. ويقدم الكتاب ملخَّصاً وأمثلة على تلك المباني والمجمعات.
يتألف الكتاب من ثلاثة مداخل تضم ثلاث فئات: المباني الأميرية الفخمة، والمساكن التقليدية، ومساكن المشاهير السابقين. والأمثلة التي يوردها الكتاب قياسية ومهمة في آن؛ فهي تبدأ بمجمعات المباني الأميرية الأرقى، ثم الأدنى فالأدنى، ثم يسرد نبذة عن بعض المساكن التقليدية مرتّبة بحسب مواقعها ومساحاتها، وبعد ذلك يستعرض مساكن المشاهير السابقين بحسب تسلسل تواريخ ميلادهم ووفاتهم. ويركّز على وصف هذه المباني كلٌ بحسب تاريخها وتصاميمها ومزاياها.
