تملك بكين إرثاً معماريّاً زاخراً، ولكنّ معرفة حماية الإرث المعماري ليست مُعمَّمة. يهدف هذا الكتاب ليس فقط لجعل مواطني بكين يفهمون ويحبّون تاريخ بكين وعمارتها، بل أيضاً لجعل العمارة الحديثة معروفة لكلّ المواطنين المهتمّين بحماية الإرث المعماري. إذ يصبح حفظ الإرث الثقافي سلوكاً ثقافيّاً وعامّاً بازدياد، إذ لم يعد بإمكان نتائج الأبحاث لعدّة مختصين وعلماء في دراساتهم أن تواكب حفظ الإرث الثقافي الحالي. وبذلك أصبح من المثبَت أنه لا يمكن لشيء أن يملك حيوية وافرة بدون المساهمة الفعالة لكلّ المواطنين.
يأتي هذا الكتاب من ضمن (سلسلة عمارة بكين القديمة) التي هي بمثابة سجلّ كتابي، وصُوَري، ورسومي للعمارة التاريخية الممتازة القائمة في بكين، وهو يقدِّم بشكلٍ رئيسي «العمارة الحديثة» في منطقة بكين.
يتألف الكتاب من مُلخّص للعمارة الحديثة في بكين بشكل عام، والعمارة الحديثة التمثيلية، والتي تشير بشكلٍ رئيسي إلى الأبنية الغربية الطراز المنشأة في بكين منذ العام 1840 إلى العام 1949. يحتوي الكتاب أيضاً على أكثر من 500 صورة و40 رسماً.
تتموضع العمارة الحديثة في هذا الكتاب في خمسة أقسام، وهي "أسلوب القصور الأوروبية الطراز، والأسلوب الكلاسيكي الغربي، والأسلوب الإنتقائي، والأسلوب الصيني التقليدي العتيق"، وغير ذلك وِفقاً لأساليب الأزمنة المختلفة. ويشتمل كلّ قسم على مفردات وصوَر العمارة الحديثة في منطقة بكين.
