هذا الكتاب أحد كتب «سلسلة عمارة بكين القديمة»، يستعرض الآثار التاريخية والثقافية الأخرى في منطقة بكين. تجمع محتويات الكتاب حالات نموذجية وتمثيلية للآثار التاريخية عدا أسوار المدن والمعابد والقصور والأضرحة والمباني الأخرى. وهي تغطّي العصور القديمة وصولاً إلى عصر جمهورية الصين.
يعاين هذا الكتاب منشآت مُشيَّدة وفقاً للأساليب المعمارية الصينية القديمة. ولأنّ بعض المباني الحكومية وبعض المدارس الجديدة مُشيّد وفقاً لأساليب معمارية غربية في آخر عهد أُسرة كينغ، لم يتعرض إليها الكتاب. وبالجمع بين الآثار التاريخية والرسومات والصور، يسعى الكتاب لإظهار وتوضيح كلّ من السمات المعمارية وخصائص المباني الثقافية في بكين على نحو منهجي وشامل، كما يسعى الكتاب في الوقت عينه لتأريخ المباني القديمة بالطريقة ذاتها.
يتضمّن الكتاب تصاميم وأمثلة على الآثار التاريخية والثقافية في منطقة بكين. ووُزعت الأمثلة المعمارية على عدة أقسام: قسم المقرّات الحكومية، ويبدأ بالمكاتب الحكومية التي كانت تقدّم الخدمات للأسرة الإمبراطورية، تليها المقرّات الحكومية الرسمية، ثمّ ينتقل إلى المقرّات الحكومية المحلّية. ويبدأ قسم المدارس والأكاديميات بالمدارس الرسمية والأكاديميات المحلّية. ويبدأ قسم قاعات الحرفيين بجمعيات المواطنين وقاعات الحرفيين الصناعيين. ويبدأ قسم الآثار التاريخية والقرى القديمة بالمباني التي كانت تؤدي وظائف خاصّة، ثم بالآثار التاريخية، لينتقل بعد ذلك إلى القرى القديمة والقناة الكبرى
