المذابحَ المؤسَّسة في فانشان وياوشان في منطقة يوهانغ في مقاطعة زيجيانغ، وأرضَ ألاشان في مدينة باوتو في منغوليا الداخلية، ودونغشانزوي في إقليم جيانبيغ في مقاطعة لياونينغ، أو قاعةَ مينغتانغ ومذبحَ التلّ الدائري المبنيّ في عهد سلالة زو، فإنّ تشييد المذابح والمعابد في الصين يشكِّل خطّ توارُث مباشراً ويختبر نموٌّا طويل الأمد بدءاً من القصر الإمبراطوري المسجَّل في كاوغونغجي (سجلات الصنّاع المهرة) الذي كُتب في عهد سلالة هان إلى «المذابح التسعة والمعابد الثمانية» المعروفة والمحفوظة في بكين والموروثة من سلالتَي مينغ وكينغ. على مدى زمنٍ طويل، وقفت أبنية المذابح والمعابد صامدةً في بكين وشكّلت عمارةً متميّزة هامة بين الأبنية المعمارية الصينية القديمة.
وهذا الكتاب هو واحدٌ من «سلسلة عمارة بكين القديمة». وهو يقدِّم بشكلٍ رئيسي «المذابح والمعابد»، في منطقة بكين والقائمة حتى اليوم وِفقاً لأهداف العبادة في الصين، حيث تُقسَم في طيات الكتاب أمثلة المذابح والمعابد إلى نوعين: مذابح ومعابد آلهة السماء والأرض، والمعابد والقاعات التذكارية وغيرها من طقوس العبادة.
يختار هذا الكتاب العديد من الأمثلة النموذجيّة التمثيليّة بدءاً من سلالة مينغ وحتى جمهورية الصين. ويُسجل المجموعات النموذجيّة والتمثيليّة للمذابح والمعابد القديمة القائمة في بكين بصورة ممنهجة من خلال الكلمات، والرسوم، والصُّوَر، ويجتهد في عرض وتسجيل المجموعة المعمارية القديمة للمذابح والمعابد في بكين. ويشتمل على ملخّص وأمثلة لمذابح ومعابد ما تزال قائمة في بكين.
