كيف عبّرت «الرسوم الصينية» عن حضارة الصين في الأعمال الفنية وماذا تناولت موضوعاتها بالوقائع والصور هو المجال الذي يتناوله المؤرخ الصيني زن غونغ في هذا الكتاب فيبدأ من الطبيعة وبالتحديد من كلمة باللغة الصينية، هي كلمة «جيانغشان» - jiangshan – وتعني حرفياً «الجبال والأنهار». ثم انطوت العبارة على معنى أو مفهوم «البلد» أو«سلطة الدولة». وفي هذا الكتاب، «جيانغشان» تحيل القارئ بوضوح ليس على المناظر الطبيعية فحسب، بل أن معناها يشمل تغطية الصور الاجتماعية والعلوم الإنسانية.
يستعرض الكتاب أهمية الفن الصيني العريق عبر محطات تاريخية عبر عنها الفنانين بلوحات تصور رسومات مدهشة فيبدأ بعهد السلالتين واي وجين، للقول أن "كل الرسامين نشروا قواعد أخلاقية وسجلوا تغييرات اجتماعية" وأن "لوحاتهم كانت تُعَدْ مراجع تاريخية لألف سنة خلت" (زي هي، 1991) وفي عهد سلالة تانغ، يبين الكتاب الأثر الأخلاقي للرسوم (اللوحات) في الإنسان الصيني ويذكر الفيلسوف زانغ يانيون الذي كان ينظر إلى اللوحات كأعمال أخلاقية، وأن الفنانين التشكيلين أشاعوا معايير أخلاقية، وحسنوا الأخلاقيات الاجتماعية، وجسّدوا الإلهام الإلهي ومثلوا الرقة الاجتماعية، وبذلك قدموا مساهمات تضاهي الأعمال الكلاسيكية الستة المنسوبة إلى الفيلسوف "كونفوشيوس"، (يانيوان، 1991)، وتلك النظريات بيّنت بوضوح تقاليد الفن التشكيلي الصيني. إلا أنه في عهد سلالة سونغ، أخذ بعض المفكرين والرسامين يعودون إلى دواخلهم: راحوا يحرّكون رِيَش الرسم بطريقة باطنية قاصدين بها التعبير مباشرة عن أفكارهم وذواتهم، وفي العصر الحديث صوّر الفنانون لحظات تاريخية تصور التاريخ الثوري للصين، ومنها لوحة "الاحتفال بالتأسيس" عام (1952)، ولا عجب أن القائد ماو قال: "إنها أمة عظيمة إنها الصين"، عندما شاهد اللوحة.
