بدا أن الريح انتزعت نفسه من فمه، دار حول حافة حفرة، وتسلق بقعة يمكنه أن يرى البحر منها. كان البحر صفرة متسخة . تنفّس بعمق، لكن الهواء لم يجوه إلا مضايقة حلقه، ولم يكن له الطعم الذي توقعه، ارتفعت سحابة من الرمال عند مشارف القرية، ربما كانت الشاحنة ذات العجلات الثلاث نقل المرأة..آه، نعم ربما، كان يتعين عليه أن يبلغها بمعنيّ الفخ.
في الحكاية الشعبية حدثاً، قوامه الفقر، هو الذي يجعل الشخصية الرئيسية تنطلق في رحلة طويلة من أجل استعادة ما فقد، وهو غالباً شيء لا غنى عنه، ومع الإشارة إلى المسافة بين الحكاية والنص الروائي الحديث، فإن حكاية الروائي الياباني "المرأة في الرمال" يبدأ بفقد هائل، هو الذي يدفع البطل، أو بمزيد في الدقة بطل الضدّ هنا، إلى الخروج إلى الصحراء بحثاً عنه.
وإذا رصد القارئ سرد روايات الحكاية في انطلاقها حتى النهاية فإنه سيجد آبي يشير على نحو سريع وعابر، قبيل النهاية، إلى حدث "العثور" فلعلّ القارئ لا تغيب عنه هذه الإضاءة، ولعله يكتشف بنفسه طبيعة ما تم العثور عليه، ولعله لا يفوت القارئ اهتمام الكاتب بالرموز التي تنتشر على امتداد العمل، كأنها العلامات والدلالات والمفاتيح، تلقي الضوء على الأسرار. وبعد فهذه الرواية رحلة ممتعة، ومرهقة معا، ومن يدري فقد يكتشف كثيرون منا، بعد إتمامها، أنهم هناك، في قرار حفرة رملية، تأخذ الريح نجنا قها، وإن كلمات كوبو آبي وحدهما أزاحت قناع الرحال عن وجوههم.
