"من الذي كتب ذلك، هي أم زهير، لم يكن الخط الذي تقرأه في صفحات الرواية أمامها واضحاً... صارت تقرأ الحكاية من أولها إلى آخرها. كانت الحكايات تتداخل، وأسماء ابتسام ومريم وياسمين وزهير و"أبو طلال"، وكريم ومصطفى و"أبو يوسف" وأمي وأمها، وكل أبطال الرواية، ليست مجرد أسماء أخرى في تتابع الحكاية، بعدما تنسى الأسماء، بل نصير كلنا أحياناً، مريمات، وعلويات وياسمينات، وفاطمات وسميّات، ويصير زهير وكريم وأبو يوسف وأبو طلال والدكتور كامل، بل والكل، كأنهم أسماء كثيرة لبطلٍ واحد. يصير لكل اسم أسماء كثيرة، وحكايات كثيرة. تصير الأزمنة البعيدة كأنها كلها الزمن الآن، الأمس في اليوم، والغد في الأمس. تصير الأمكنة أمكنة كثيرة، لمكان واحد، ويصير من يحيا كأنه يذهب إلى عمله، يدخّن ويسمع الطقش والفقش، يرقص وينجب بنات وصبياناً. شردت بذهنها، لتتذكر من الذي كتب؟ وشردت بذهنها لتتذكر إذا كانت الذكريات ذكرياتها، أم ذكريات الأبطال. من مريم بينهن؟ من أنا بينهن؟ من ابتسام، ومن أبو يوسف، ومن خلال ومن كريم وغيرهم؟ شردت، لتتأكد من وجهها بين الوجوه التي تقرأها، لتعرف ما إذا كانت من المفقودين، أو الأموات أو الأحياء منهم".
