إن تعبير الجيوبوليتيكا والتعابير المرادفة، مثل الجيوسياسة أو الجغراسية وحتى الجغرافيا السياسية، يجري استخدامها بكثافة، ولكن بشكل يكتنفه الغموض والإبهام، وذلك في وسائل الإعلام، كما في نصوص ومنشورات أكثر من أن تحصى...
فكان لا بُدّ من الخوض في علم أو منهج الجيوبوليتيكا، وإيضاح أنه يسعى إلى تحليل الأفكار والتصوّرات "الأرضانية" أي الخاصة بالأراضي المتنازع عليها، مع الإحاطة بالمكوّنات الجغرافية لهذه الأراضي، وذلك بهدف تحديد محتوى وحجم النزاع، استشراق مناحيه، المساهمة في إيجاد الحلول له. وهنا تحديدًا، يتناول الكتاب الرهانات الجيوبوليتيكية الرئيسية في المشرق العربي، وهي مزوعة على ثلاثة محاور متقاطعة فيما بينها:
الضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة.
الجولان.
جنوب لبنان.
