صوفي فيوليه، في هذا العمل المخصص لـ«الإسلاموية المتطرّفة في الغرب» انكبت على «أسباب الالتحاق بالتشكيلات الإسلاموية المسمّاة متطرّفة، في المجتمعات الغربية».
ويعتمد هذا الكتاب المشوّق والموثّق جيداً على البحوث الأكثر أهمية في المسألة، وبخاصة على بعض التحقيقات الميدانية التي تعطي فكرة واضحة عن شخصيات الأفراد المعنيين، وعن دوافع تطوّرهم السلوكي. حيث يتفحص مراحل تطوّرهم المختلفة، من بداية استيائهم من المجتمعات -التي يعيشون فيها، ويشعرون أنهم منبوذون منها باعتبارهم مؤمنين، ويدينونها إذن برمتها- حتى تبنيهم لإسلام «على قياسهم»، يجدون فيه أنفسهم، ومن ثم عبور بعضهم إلى الإرهاب ضمن مجموعات غير منظمة غالباً، وبصورة فردية أحياناً، إذ يمضي بعضهم مثل مراح إلى مناطق الصراع للتدريب.
تبيّن صوفي فيوليه أن الأشخاص المعنيين ليسوا دمىً ولا هم عدميّون، بل يتّصفون بعقلانية خاصة، ويودّون إعطاء معنىً ما لحياتهم، إذ يصيرون مقاتلين من أجل ثأر، ومناضلين من أجل مجتمع جديد، فهم مسؤولون إذن بصفة فردية وجماعية، والموت ضمن هذا الإطار بالذات ليس عملاً يائساً ولا يخيفهم، لأن المعركة مستمرة وسيواصلها آخرون، وتفسّر المؤلفة لماذا.
