يعد الكتاب خطوة هامة في تطوير ما بعد الإسلاموية باعتبارها نموذجًا تحليليًّا لاستكشاف تحولات الحركات الإسلامية في سياقات اجتماعية متنوعة، وبالتالي يخرج المفهوم من سياقه الزمانـي الذي يشير إلى مرحلة محدودة في تطور هذه الحركات في مرحلة ما بعد الحرب الباردة. من ناحية أخرى، يحاول عالم اجتماع الشرق الأوسط آصف بيات، الذي يقوم الكتاب على مجهوده الفكري والبحثـي، أن يقدم ما بعد الإسلاموية باعتبارها مشروعًا اجتماعيًّا وفكريًّا بديلًا لهيمنة الإسلاموية الفكرية خاصة بعد اتضاح إفلاسها الفكري وانسداد أفقها التاريخي مع استمرار تأثيرها الاجتماعي وصراعاتها السياسية المزمنة. «إنها تمثل سعيًّا نحو دمج التدين بالحقوق والإيمان بالحرية والإسلام بالتحرر. إنها محاولة لقلب المبادئ المؤسِّسة للإسلاموية رأسًا على عقب من خلال التأكيد على الحقوق بدلاً من الواجبات، والتعددية محل السلطوية، والتاريخ بدلًا من النصوص الجامدة، والمستقبل بدلًا من الماضـي». بهذا المعنـى يحاول الكتاب قياس المفهوم على نطاق واسع من النماذج الاجتماعية المتباينة في العالم الإسلامي من إندونيسيا إلى المغرب من خلال رصد تطور الإسلاموية وتفاعلها مع المجتمعات الإسلامية الحديثة.
