الكتاب هو تصور أولي عن الذاكرة واستعمالاتها، وما يتصل بها من جدل يتعلق بمفهومي "الأمة" و"التاريخ"، وأثر ذلك كله في ظهور وصعود الرواية العربية بوصفها الممثل لسرديات الأمة وتاريخها. وبهذا الصدد تستعير مقولة لافتة من المفكر الفرنسي "بيير نورا" كان لها تأثير كبير في تأملها مسارات الرواية العربية وتحولاتها، وهو يقول: "ما ندعوه اليوم باسم الذاكرة هو ليس ذاكرة لكنه تاريخ. وما نقول عنه جدلاً إحياء الذاكرة هو في الواقع رعشتها الأخيرة حينما تستهلكها الموضوعات التاريخية. والحاجة للذاكرة هي حاجة للتاريخ". وكيف وظّف الكتاب العرب هذه الثيمة فيما كتبوا ونشروا كان أكثر من حاجتها لتفحص كيفية استعمال الذاكرة، كما لو أن "التاريخ" صيغة أخرى غير ما تفترضه استعمالات الذاكرة في جدلها مع السرد حيناً، ومع التاريخ حيناً آخر، فالتقديم الذي صدّرت به "أويان" كتابها يحفل بمواد بحثية تربط "الأمة" بإعادة كتابة التاريخ، وهي ترى أن هذا الربط لابدّ أن يحيل على الذاكرة الجماعية لأمة من الأمم والعلاقة الثلاثية بين الدولة- الأمة والحداثة والتراث، والأخيرة "التراث" تنظر إليها "أويان" في سياق توظيف الرواية العربية لها. ولنا، هنا، أن نسأل ما هي الرواية العربية التي تتحدث عنها المستشرقة الصينية دكتورة "أويان"؟ فمن يقرأ كتاب "أويان" وخاصة الفصل الأول تحت عنوان: "النوستالجيا: سياسة من أجل الماضي"، ليكتشف أن الباحثة إنما تتحدث عن استعمالات اللغة عند شاعر كـ"نزار قباني"، وكيف تفارق استعمالات شاعر آخر، من ثقافة وأدب مختلف، هو التشيلي "بابلو نيرودا"، فما علاقة الرواية العربية، وهو موضوع وعنوان الكتاب ذاته، بالشِّعر والشُّعراء العرب.
تفترض "أويان" أن منطق السرد هو الناظم والمتحكم في هذه القضية، وهو الذي سهّل عليها أن تستجلب نصوصاً شعرية لتتأمل من خلالها فكرة النوستالجيا وتأثيراتها على التقاليد الأدبية المعتمدة والمعادة صياغتها من جديد، والأهم أن تتعامل مع نصوص "قباني" و"أدونيس" ولاحقاً كتاب "ذاكرة للنسيان" لـ"محمود درويش"، هيمنت عليه الصياغات النثرية. ولكن ماذا يعني منطق السرد هنا؟ إنها ليس سوى "فكرة المروية".
