دون غوتة يومياته هذه استناداً إلى رحلتين إلى إيطاليا، الأولى قام بها في أيلول/ سبتمبر 1786، واستمرت حتى شباط/فبراير من العام 1787، فقضى خمسة شهور في فيرونا، البندقية، روما. والرحلة الثانية بدأها في حزيران/يونيو من العام 1787 واستمرت حتى نيسان/ابريل من العام 1788، قضاها هذه المرة كلها في روما عازما على التمتع بمعالمها وآثارها ومتاحفها.
تنعكس في صفحات هذا الكتاب، ليس فقط صور الآثار والأعمال الأدبية والفنية لعصور متتالية من الإبداعات وكنوز المعرفة، ولكن أيضا ثقافة شاعر عظيم خلدته أوروبا ومعها البشرية جمعاء بوصفه نموذجا لأديب تجاوز بفكره المضيء وروحه الخلاقة حدود بلاده ولغته ليكون أديب الإنسانية.
