كانت "آلام فوتر" المظهر الأول للرومانسية، ظهرت هذه الرواية عام 1774. وقدم غوته نسختها الأولى إلى "شارلوت" مع كلمة إهداء لطيفة فأثارت في قلبها شيئاً من الأسى الحالم. ورأى "كستز" أن صديقه قد ظلمه بالصورة التي قدّمه فيها، وأنه أساء إلى سمعة زوجته. وبدأت بينهما سلسلة من الرسائل فيها عتاب ولوم واستغفار، حتى اضطر غوته إلى إجراء بعض التبديلات، فظهرت "الآم فوتر" بشكلها النهائي سنة 1786.
للكتاب بإمكانته السامية في الأدب الألماني والأدب الأوروبي، فهو يتعدى طبيعة كونه قصة حب لشاعر عظيم، توفي فيها وصف دقائق مشاعرة إلى اعتباره ثورة مفكر تجابه الحياة في حالة من توتر النفس وإرهاف الحس، فيسعى إلى تنمية ينابيعها من مشاعر الخوف والصفارة والوهم في تعززها فينا وتحفر أخاديدها بعمق، بعض قوانين المجتمع وتقاليده. إنه ثورة على العقل في ركونه واستسلامه، ودعوة إلى الطبيعة إلى القلب الذي يعتبره غوته مصدر المقدسات ومنبع كل قوة وفضيلة.
والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يحتوي الترجمة العربية لرواية "آلام فرتر" حاول المترجم من خلالها تقديم نص تربوي من خلال البعد الإنساني العميق الذي تمتع به فرتر التجارب والأحداث التي مر بها والتي أكدت ذلك المنحى الإنساني العميق. وما يميز هذه الترجمة الحالية للرواية هو أنها جاءت متضمنة على مجموعة من الأسئلة التحليلية الهامة، هذا بالإضافى إلى نبذة مختصرة جاءت من خاتمة الرواية وهي مخصصة للتعريف بالرواية.
