عام 1964 أصبح فيصل بن عبد العزيز ملك بلد يحوز ربعَ احتياطيات العالم من البترول ويحتضن في رحابه مكّة والمدينة، ووُصِف بأنه «أقوى حاكم عربي منذ قرون». بعد ذلك بإحدى عشرة سنة أرداه أحد أبناء أشقائه برصاصة أطلقها على رأسه عن كثب أمام عدسات التلفزيون.
يروي أليكسي فاسيليف قصّة قائد متديّن وحَذِر وحازم وجّه دفّة المملكة العربية السعودية متجاوزاً حقلَ ألغامِ المشكلات المحلّية والعلاقات العربية الداخلية وتراجُع النفوذ السوفياتي في الشرق الأوسط. وحافظ الملك فيصل على علاقاته مع كل من مصر والولايات المتحدة الأميركية عبر حربَين بين العرب وإسرائيل وحظر نفطي فرضه العرب في عام 1973.
شمل العمل البحثي الذي قام به فاسيليف وثائق أصلية ومقابلات أجراها باللغات العربية والروسية والإنكليزية، ما أتاح له رؤيةً فريدةً من نوعها لهذه الشخصية الفذّة.
