يتناول الكتاب تطوّر بنية تنظيم القاعدة في اليمن لثلاثة أجيال، ويرسم بورتريهات لأبرز شخصياته السابقة والحالية، وكذلك للسعوديين الذين التحقوا به، بعد توحيد التنظيمين اليمني والسعودي في مطلع سنة 2009، على يد اليمني ناصر الوحيشي، سكرتير بن لادن السابق، والسعودي العائد من معتقل غوانتانامو، سعيد الشهري.
يتوقّف الكتاب أمام العمليات الاستباقية التي بدأت في اليمن نهاية 2009، ورؤية صنعاء وواشنطن لمواجهة القاعدة وفتح جبهة دولية جديدة، بعدما باتت اليمن مرشّحة لأن تتحوّل إلى ملاذ أساسي للقاعدة بعد أفغانستان وباكستان، ووجود أعداد من الاجانب الذين تمّ تدريبهم وإعدادهم للقيام بعمليات نوعية في الغرب.
ويكشف التداخل بين نشاط القاعدة وعمل الأجهزة الرسمية، واستفادة القاعدة من ذلك. ويتوقّف عند أبرز عمليات القاعدة، وخصوصاً تفجير المدمرة "يو إس إس كول"، التي كانت أول عملية رسمية للتنظيم، والمقدّمة لتفجيرات 11 سبتمبر. كما يتناول العمليات الجهادية منذ عام 1992، ولا سيّما ملفّ الاغتيالات السياسية ضدّ الجنوبيين.
