فرهاد دفتري (بالفارسية: فرهاد دفتری ) (بالإنجليزية: Farhad Daftary ) (و. 1938 م) هو أكاديمي إيراني يعمل في معهد الدراسات الإسماعيلية.
درس في إيران والولايات المتحدة وأوروبا وحاز الدكتوراه من جامعة كاليفورنيا عام 1971 م. انتسب عام 1988 م إلى معهد الدراسات الإسماعيلية وهو محرّر في موسوعة إيرانيكا.

حتى منتصف القرن العشرين، كان الإسماعيليون يُدرسون ويُحكم عليهم بشكل شبه كامل على أساس وقائع قام أعداؤهم بجمعها أو باختراعها. نتيجة ذلك، راحت مجموعة من الأساطير حول تعاليم الإسماعيليين وممارساتهم تنتشر بشكل واسع في العالم الإسلامي كما في الغرب.أما الاختراق في هذا المجال، فقد حدث بفضل اكتشاف عدد من النصوص الإسماعيلية ودراستها. وكانت هذه النصوص محفوظة ضمن مجموعات خاصة في الهند وآسيا الوسطى وسوريا واليمن ومناطق أخرى. وقد تمّ تحقيقها وترجمتها ونشرها ابتداءً من خمسينيات القرن العشرين، مما ساهم في التقدّم الملحوظ في البحث الإسماعيلي الحديث.
يتناول هذا الكتاب جوانب من الفكر والتاريخ الإسماعيليَّين في العصور الوسطى. كما يناقش المراحل المختلفة من هذا التاريخ، واصفاً مساهمة الإسماعيليين الأوائل واللاحقين في الثقافة الإسلامية.
ويتناول عدد من الفصول أفراداً إسماعيليين بعينهم، مثل حسن الصبّاح. وتحدّد فصول أخرى مكانة الإسماعيليين في المجتمعات الإسلامية الوسيطة، إضافة إلى تقصّي العلاقات الإسماعيلية-الصليبية وما نتج منها من أساطير منسوجة حول الإسماعيليين.
إن المقالات التي جرى جمعها في هذا الكتاب تمثّّل بحثاً حديثاً في الدراسات الإسماعيلية، وتساهم بشكل كبير في فهمنا لمجتمع إسلامي في العصور الوسطى؛ كما أنها ستكون ذات قيمة كبيرة بالنسبة إلى المؤرّخين والباحثين المهتمّين بشؤون العالم الإسلامي.
