الهرطقة في المعجم اللاهوتي المسيحي تقابلها البدعة في المعجم الإسلامي. ولكن بينما الهرطقة في المعجم الأول لا تعني سوى الخروج على العقيدة القويمة، فإن البدعة مشتقة في العربية من المصدر نفسه الذي تشتق منه كلمة إبداع. فكأن لا مبدع إلا أن يكون مبتدعاً، أي خارجاً في محصلة الحساب على الإجماع والفكر الجماعي. من هنا الطابع «المهرطق» للدراسات المجموعة في هذا الكتاب، والتي لا تقدم أجوبة بقدر ما تثير أسئلة وتعيد صياغة الإشكاليات،
ومنها إشكالية الديموقراطية: هل هي ثمرة برسم القطف أم بذرة برسم الزرع؟ وهل هي محض آلية مرهونة بصندوق الاقتراع أم هي أيضاً ثقافة، ومرهونة بالتالي بصندوق جمجمة الرأس؟ ومنها إشكالية العلمانية: أهي محض إفراز للتطور التاريخي للمسيحية أم لها أيضاً بذورها في الإسلام؟ وفي هذه الحال، ما النصاب القرآني الحقيقي لعقيدة الحاكمية الإلهية؟
ومنها إشكالية الترجمة في الإسلام: لا كيف رأت النور، بل كيف قتلت؟ ومنها إشكالية الحداثة: هل أوروبا هي التي اخترعتها أم هي التي اخترعت أوروبا؟
وأولاً وأخيراً: لمَ الممانعة العربية؟ أثقافة كراهية الآخر أم الاعتمال المتفاقم للجرح النرجسي؟
