ينحدر المؤيَّد في الدين الشيرازي من أصول فارسية. وقد برع كداعية إسماعيلي، ورجل دولة وشاعر، وتبوّأ منصب رئيس الدعوة الإسماعيلية ("داعي الدعاة") في عهد الخليفة الفاطمي المستنصر باللَّه في القاهرة؛ مركز الدولة الفاطمية وعاصمتها آنذاك.
يتقصّى هذا الكتاب "سيرة المؤيّد في الدين الشيرازي"، ويسرد تفاصيل دقيقة تطال حياته وإنجازاته خلال سنوات كفاحه الطويلة. ويتطرق إلى محاولاته كسب حكام البويهيين، ورحلته إلى القاهرة وطموحه في التقرب من إمامها الفاطمي. كما يفصّل رحلته إلى شمال سوريا والعراق بصفة مبعوث فاطمي مطلق الصلاحيات، ويبيّن هدفه من هذه المهمة وكيف استطاع إنشاء حلف يجمع الأمراء المحليين بمواجهة السلاجقة الأتراك الذين نجحوا في غزو العالم الإسلامي في تلك الحقبة الصاخبة من التاريخ.
لا تقتصر "السيرة" على تحليل حياة المؤيَّد في الدين الشيرازي فقط؛ بل تعمد مؤلفة الكتاب إلى إظهار مدى أهمية "السيرة" كمصدر لتاريخ تلك الحقبة، بالإضافة إلى كونها مذكرات شخصية حميمة لداعية فاطمي كرّس حياته وفكره من أجل نشر الدعوة الإسماعيلية. كما تعدّ "السيرة" مصدراً قيّماً وشاملاً للتاريخ الإسلامي في القرن الخامس الهجري/ الحادي عشر الميلادي، وهي فترة حساسة من التاريخ الإسلامي، شهدت صراعاً سياسياً وعسكرياً محتدماً بين العباسيين والفاطميين، وبين البويهيين والسلاجقة، من أجل السيطرة على العالم الإسلامي.
