شكلت الصحراء العربية عبر التاريخ وحياً استلهم منه شعراء البادية قصائدهم. ولطالما قصدها رحالة غربيّون لتقصّي تاريخها وتاريخ القبائل التي سكنتها، وفك رموز شعرها البدوي وألغازه، والإطلالة من خلاله على ما اكتنف هذه البادية الغامضة من حروب القبائل وغزواتها، ومن مغامرات شعرائها.
هذا الكتاب رحلة عبر فيافي الربع الخالي، يقوم بها رحّالة نهم لتحرّي تاريخ القبائل ونبش ماضيها. فمارسيل كوربرشوك، الباحث الهولندي، انغمس راضياً في حياة البدو وحفظ أشعارهم ونازلهم في قراءة الشعر بلهجتهم البدوية. وهو في كل ذلك كان يدوّن ما يشاهد ويسمع.
كانت قبيلة عتيبة بداية بحثه، ومنها انتقل الى شمّر، ومن ثم إلى الدواسر. وفيما كان الدخول وحومل، لا يعدوان أكثر من اسمي مكانين قرأ عنهما الرحالة الغربيون في شعر امرئ القيس، وظلا غامضين دونهم، كان كوربرشوك أول غربي يطأ هذين الجبلين، ويتحرّى عن سر العلاقة التي تربط امرأ القيس بهما.
في هذا الكتاب نقف وجهاً لوجه مع تفصيلات حياة البادية: النساء المحظور عليهن التخالط مع الرجال، تمييز القبائل بين العرب الأقحاح وغيرهم ممن وفدوا على الجزيرة، نظرة المجتمع البدوي المسلم إلى "الآخر" المسيحي الغربي، حروب القبائل في ما بينها طلباً للماء والرعي، ونظرة البدو، بشيء من القداسة، إلى اقتناء الخيول.
إنها رحلة تزخر بتناقضات كثيرة ولافتة أعاد فيها كوربرشوك اكتشاف حياة قبائل البدو وخلقهم من جديد.
