أمضى الباحث الأمريكي (كلنتون بيلي) قرابة خمسة عقود من عمره (مولود عام 1936) في دراسة عميقة لحياة بدو النقب وسيناء، وتعرّف عن قرب إلى شيوخهم ووجهائهم، وكانت له صداقات معمّقة مع أغلبهم. أثمرت عن كُتب عدّة في شؤونهم ومأثوراتهم، فقد كتب عن أشعارهم وثقافتهم وقوانينهم، في محاولة للوصول إلى قوّة تأثيراتهم كمجموعة إثنية، على عصر كتابة التوراة، بعلمية وحيادية تامّتين، فجاء هذا الكتاب المتميّز بمادّته. في المقدمة هنالك واقعة تُروى -على أهميتها- بطرافة ما، مفادها أن (بيلي) أستُدرِج عام 1970 إلى مخيم واحدة من قبائل بدو سيناء، على أساس شرب القهوة، لكنّه حين فعل وهمّ بالمغادرة، وجد أن استعدادات المائدة قد جُهّزت، وصار لزاماً عليه، وهو الملتزم بمواعيد تخصّ بحوثه على الدوام؛ أن يلازم المكان لمدّة أطول: عندما أنهيتُ شرب القهوة وأعلنتُ عزمي على الانصراف، أظهرَ (سويلم) فجأةً يده أمامي وهي منقوعة بدم الغنم وأعلن: "لا يمكنك الانصراف الآن، فقد ذبحنا للتوّ عشاءك. لا يمكنك الانصراف إلّا بعد أن تأكل! ". وكان الغرض من ذلك هو أن يتوسّط عند القوات الإسرائيلية لغرض السماح لهم بإقامة حفل ختان جماعي لمن أكمل الثالثة عشرة من أبنائهم، في جانب تحجبهم فيه تلال عالية عن الفضاء المفتوح. ذلك أن الغرض من إقامة الحفل في تلك المنطقة من سيناء -المحتلّة آنذاك- هو لكي يكون المخيم مرئياً من قبل الجميع، "فبالنسبة للبدو، عدم إقامة الحفلة حيث يمكن رؤيتها من قبل المارة كان بمثابة كونهم غير مضيافين، وكأنهم غير راغبين بالضيوف. من هنا طلبهم وأهميته لهم". ومن هذا يتبيّن مدى الثقل الذي يمتلكه هذا الرجل، فهو من جانب يستطيع التأثير على القوات الإسرائيلية، ومن جانب آخر نتبيّن قوّة العلاقة التي تربطه بهؤلاء المضيّفين الذي أقام بين ظهرانَيهم طوال تلك الفترة المديدة، صديقاً لهم، وباحثاً في شؤونهم، وناشطاً في الدفاع عن حقوقهم المدنية، منذ العام 1978 وحتّى اللحظة.
