عرفت مؤلفة هذا الكتاب نوري السعيد منذ زواجها بابنه صباح السعيد عام 1936، وعاشت مع أسرة زوجها في دار واحدة حتى وقوع الانقلاب في العراق عام 1958، وواكبت حياته السياسية واليومية عن كثب. وإذ لم تكن لنوري السعيد ابنة، فإن الدكتورة عصمت ملأت هذا الفراغ في حياته فكانت ابنته المقربة.
يتألف هذا الكتاب الذي وضعته الدكتورة عصمت السعيد بعد نحو ثلاثين عاماً من مقتل نوري السعيد، وبعد أن ابتعدت الأحداث بدرجة تجعل من الممكن النظر إليها بموضوعية وتجرّد، من عنصرين مهمّين، أولهما أعمال نوري السعيد، رجل الدولة، ومساهمته في بناء كيانه، ودوره في القضايا العربية، والثاني وصف نوري السعيد الإنسان وحياته اليومية والمنزلية ومشاعره الشخصية وعاداته. وليس هنالك من يلمّ بهذين العنصرين مثل مؤلفة الكتاب التي رافقت نوري السعيد نحو عشرين عاماً وعرفته كما لم يعرفه إنسان.
في الكتاب معلومات تاريخية مهمة تنشر للمرة الأولى، وتحليل سياسي عميق، وذكريات شخصية قيّمة، اجتمعت لتجعله من أهم المراجع في التاريخ العربي الحديث.
