رصد الكاتب السوري الفارس الذهبي في مسرحيته "زفرة السوري الأخيرة" منحنى الثورات العسكرية ومصائر الثوار الذين يحولون بلادهم إلى سجن كبير ويصبحون بدعوى الحفاظ على الثورة جلادين يحترفون القمع والقتل حتى لو ضحوا بالشعب نفسه.
وتعالج المسرحية العلاقة بين جيلين أحدهما يمثله لواء عراقي مهزوم يهرب إلى سوريا عقب احتلال العراق عام 2003، وجيل شاب يؤمن بحريته وينتزعها ويرى أن انهيار نظام الدكتاتور يبدأ قبل وصول الغزاة حين يتحول الشعب الذي قامت الثورة من أجله إلى جرذان وخونة وعملاء وجواسيس، وفي أحسن الأحوال هم مجرد قطيع لا يستحق إلا الإهانة.
ويمثل جيل الحرية في المسرحية الأخوان الجامعيان كمال، وريما التي ترفض الاحتلال الأجنبي بالطبع ولكنها تؤمن بكرامة الشعب، وأنه لا يوجد شيء في هذا العالم يبرر لأحد أن يدوس أحدا من أجل قضية، وأن الإنسان الذي يفقد كرامته أو يعذبه الجلادون حتى يفقد إحساسه بإنسانيته لا يصلح للدفاع عن قضية ولو كانت عادلة
