بعد وفاة ستالين بأشهر قليلة بدأ الكاتب الروسي إيليا إهربورغ في كتابة تلك الرواية التي راجع فيها الفترة الستالينية وما عاناه فيها الروس من خنق للحرية الإنسانية، إهربورغ وبجانب كونه شاعرا وروائيا رقيق الحس كان مراسل حرب ذو آراء سياسية شجاعة فبعد سنوات من نقده اللاذع والحذر للنظام الستاليني قرر الإنحياز إلى أمته ضد خطر النازية القادم من غرب بلاده حتى اضطره ذلك للإحتماء بالسفارة الروسية أثناء احتلال الألمان لباريس، مطلقا من مخبأه التقارير والمقالات الصحفية التي تهاجم العجرفة الألمانية وهو ما جعل هتلر يأمر بإعدامه حينما هاجمت القوات الألمانية الإتحاد السوفيتي.
بعد رحلة إلى آخر الليل والتي روى فيها فيرناند سيلين أهوال الحرب العالمية الأولى من داخل المعسكرات الفرنسية، تأتي رواية ذوبان الثلوج لتروي لنا جانبا آخر من جوانب الحروب والشمولية، هذه المرة من داخل تفاصيل الحياة الروسية في الإتحاد السوفيتي.
