"دخلت إلى حمام مليء بالمرايا ورأيت بغتة صورًا هاربة لي وأنا شبه عار ومغطًّى بزيت أسود، بدوت بوجه بُنِّيٍّ وشعر شائك وحسب. كان ثمَّة صبيٌّ شقيٌّ هناك، شخص من إحدى قصص ""كتاب الأدغال""، عيناه ترقباني، بيضاوان كمصباحين. كان هذا أوَّل انعكاس أو صورة أتذكَّرها عن نفسي. لقد كانت تلك صورتي في صباي الذي تشبَّثت به سنوات، شخص مشدوه، في طور التَّشكُّل، لم يصبح أحدًا ما أو شيئًا ما بعد. أدركت وجود البارون عند حافَّة إطار المرآة يراقبني. له نظرة مُراعية. لقد بدا وكأنَّه فهم ما كنت أرى في المرآة، وكأنَّه هو الآخر فعل ذلك مرَّةً. ألقى إليَّ منشفة وأمرني أن أنظِّف جسدي وأرتدي باقي ثيابي التي جلبها في حقيبته الرياضية.""* في مطلع الخمسينيات، يركب صبيٌّ في الحادية عشرة من عمره باخرةً تنطلق من سريلانكا ذاهبةً إلى بريطانيا، تشق في طريقها البحر الأحمر وقناة السويس، ويشهد الصبيّ ميناء عدن، وأبها، وجدّة، وبورسعيد. يجلس في أوقات الطعام إلى ""مائدة القطّ"" – هي أبعد الموائد عن مائدة القبطان، ويجلس إليها أيضًا مجموعة من ""الكبار"" ذوي الشخصيّات الغريبة، وصبيّان: كاسْيَس ورام الدّين. يُغامر الصِّبيان على ظهر الباخرة أحرارًا مثل زئبق سائل، يعرفون عن كثب الأغنياء واللصوص، والعلماء والمتوحّدين، ويتعقّبون السّجين الذي لا يُسمح له بالخروج إلّا منتصف الليل معرّضين أنفسهم لخطر لا يُدركون مداه. رحلةٌ من العواصف والشّموس ستبقى في خيالهم طوال حياتهم، سيشكّون في حدوثها، لكن الشخصيات الغريبة التي عاشروها علّمَتهم أمورًا ستُشكِّل شخصياتهم إلى الأبد، فقد ركبوا الباخرة أطفالًا، وترجّلوا عنها ناضجين"
