تروي أحداث الرواية طفولة الكاتب الفرنسي هيرفي بازان و التي يرويها على لسان الصغير جان ريزو . في بداية طفولته ، يقيم جان مع أخيه فرديناند في منزل جدته في لابيل أونجري بفرنسا في حين استقر والداه مع أخيه الصغير مارسال بالصين ، وفي أولى فصول الكتاب ، يروي حادثة خنقه لأفعى بيده .بعد وفاة الجدة، يتحمس الصغيران لعودة والديهما من الصين ، ويستعدان لحياتهما الجديدة بكل شوق . إلا أن الصفعة التي تلقاها جان من والدته بمجرد نزولها من القطار أعادته إلى أرض الواقع و صدمته بالحقيقة. الحقيقة التي سرعان ما تكشِف له عن والدة مسيطرة تتحكم بكل تحركات و متنفسات أطفالها بطريقة تعسفية ، حيث تحرص على "جز" شعرهم بنفسها ، تداوم على مراقبة غرفهم و كل ما فيها ، تقرر ما يتوجب عليهم أكله ، و تمنع عنهم كل ما ترى أنه يهدد صحتهم أو نشأتهم. و ما زاد الطين بلة، أن الأم سيطرت حتى على قرارات الوالد المهووس بدراسة عالم الذباب خاصة و الحشرات عامة، وذلك لأنها المنحدرة من أسرة برجوازية غنية ، و لأنها من تملك زمام ثروة العائلة ، فهي بالضرورة من تسير كل شيء. يدرس أطفال عائلة ريزو في منزلهم، برعاية قسيس جُلِـبَ خصيصا لهذا الغرض، وكثيرا ما طَرَدت السيدة الوالدة مدرسي و مربي أبنائها خلال الرواية و ذلك لمعارضتهم نظام تربيتها التعسفي.
