تؤدي بي هذه الرواية إلى فِهمِ أصل فن "فوكنر"، هَذا الأصل هو الوَهم، مِن الحَق أن كلّ فن زائف؛ ففن التّصوير، مَثلًا، يكذب في صَدد المتصور، "سارتورس" رواية عَن الصراع بين الواقع والوهم، بين ماضٍ آخذ في الزوال، وحاضر آخذ في الهيمنة".
هَذه رواية ذات نَفَس مَلحمي، تجمع بَين ذكريات الحَرب الأهليّة وذكريات الحرب العالمية الأولى. كَما تُصَوّر زَوال مجتمع تَقليدي، بخيرهِ وشَرّهِ، وتَنقل حِسًا مُخامرًا بالحَنينِ إلى الماضي وانقشاع الأوهام.
