آه أيّها الولودون، يا إخوتي وأخواتي الصغار، أنتم بحقّ أقوى جيل وُجِدَ حتى اليوم. لكنَّ ذلك لم يُنقذكم. إنَّ الجيل الذي لم يثِق في أحد يتجاوز الثلاثين من العمر ويقترب من سن الخمسين بنسبة زيادة تبلغ سبعة وسبعين مليون في العام. لقد كتبتُ «الخوف من الخمسين» لأنني شعرتُ في أعماقي بأنَّ بلوغ الخمسين من العمر سوف يكون اختباراً صعباً بالنسبة إليّ وإلى الولودين. إنْ بلوغ سن الخمسين يعني أنك سوف تفعل ما لا يخطر على البال - أنْ تُصبح عجوزاً وغير متأثّر بالجديد- وهذا يُغيِّر كل شيء. أنا لستُ من الجيل الولود. أنا ابنة الحرب، وُلِدتُ قُبيل بدء الاجتياح السكاني الأعظم، لكنني عشتُ مع أشخاص من ذلك الجيل وتزوجت منهم - وأنا نفسي أنتمي قليلاً إلى ذلك الجيل: نرجسيّة، مهووسة بالجنس، وجرّتني الأبوّة إلى سن البلوغ وأنا أرفس وأصرخ. وفعلتُ العديد مما يفعله فرد من ذلك الجيل: تعاطي الماريغوانا (عندما كانت شيئاً جيداً)، سماع البيتلز، والمشاركة في مسيرات السلام والمظاهرات المناهضة لحرب فييتنام مع زملائي من سيتي كوليج في نيويورك (عندما كنتُ في الثالثة والعشرين وكانوا في الثامنة عشرة). أتذكّر أنني أتمدّد في جادة أمستردام مع مئات من الطلاب في أوائل ربيع عام 1970 احتجاجاً على مذبحة كينت ستيت، حيث قُتِل أربعة من الطلاب رمياً برصاص حرّس أوهايو الوطني في أثناء اشتراكهم في مظاهرة سِلميّة ضد اجتياح نيكسون لكمبوديا. وأتذكّر أنَّ الصوت الوحيد الذي صدر أتى من أضواء إشارات المرور وهي تنتقل من الأخضر إلى الأصفر إلى الأحمر.
