ليس هذا الكتاب سيرة، ولا رواية طبعاً، ربما هو شيء يقع بين الأدب وعلم الإجتماع والتاريخ، إذ كان من الضروري أن تتحول والدتي، التي ولدت في وسط مقهور لطالما تمنَّت الخروج منه، إلى تاريخ حتى أشعر بأنني أقلُّ وحدة وتكلَّفاً في عالم الكلمات والأفكار القاهر، الذي انتقلتُ إليه نزولاً عند رغبتها.
لن أسمع صوتها مجدَّداً، إنها هي، وكلماتها ويداها وحركاتها وأسلوبها في الضحك ومشيتها، من كانت توحّد المرأة التي أنا عليها اليوم بالطفلة التي كنتها في الابق، وبموتها فقدتُ آخر رابط بيني وبين العالم الذي جئت منه.
