عندما نظر علماء الفلك إلى الكون، رأوا هناك نقطة سوداء، لا تشع ضوءا، ولا ترسل نورا، بل تبتلع كل ما حولها بقوة هائلة، حتى إن الضوء نفسه لا يستطيع الخروج منها، فهي سواد حالك يجذب كل شيء. فأسموها "الثقب الأسود". ولما نظر علماء النفس إلى الإنسان، وجدوا مرضا واحدا عندما يُصاب به البشر يُفقدهم جمال روحهم، ويلغي سعادة نفوسهم، ويوقف فكر عقولهم، ويمنع بسمة شفاههم، ويطفئ نور وجوههم، فلا تجد أي حياة في وجه من أصيب به، إنه الاكتئاب، وهو ثقب النفس الأسود. ولما نظر المرضى إلى معاناتهم الشديدة مع هذا المرض، لم يترددوا في تسميته سرطان النفس، واعتبروه مثل "الكلب الأسود".
