نقرأ في هذا الكتاب جزء من سيرة "مهاتما غاندي" (1869-1948) السياسي البارز والزعيم الروحي للهند خلال حركة إستقلال الهند. وقد جاءت هذه السيرة كما كتبها غاندي نفسه ونشرها رجل إنجليزي من مؤيديه المعجبين بشخصه ويدعى مستر "أندروز"، وقد راجعها غاندي قبل نشرها.
وهذا الجزء من تاريخ غاندي يغطي تاريخ نشأته في "بورباندار" حتى تاريخ عودته إلى الهند من جنوب أفريقيا، حيث حقق هناك بواكير نجاحات حركة نضاله وانتصار حركة إحتجاجات العمال الهنود والجنوب أفريقيين.
يضم الكتاب ستة عشر فصلاً تبدأ بـ "كلمة عن روح الهند مهاتما غاندي" بقلم الراحل الكبير عباس محمود العقاد، مروراً بمولد غاندي ومسكنه ونضالاته في ناتال وبريتوريا، ودوربان، وحرب البوير، وصولاً إلى السجن والإنتصار.
