يبني القاص الأردني جعفر العقيلي في مجموعته "ضيوف ثقال الظل" عالماً شديد الثراء والحيوية، مازجاً كما يرى الكاتب محمود الريماوي، بين ما هو واقعي وفوق واقعي، دون أن تختلّ سيطرته على أدوات القصّ والتشخيص الحسّي للوقائع، ويتقدّم بعدئذٍ خطوة أخرى في ولوج عالم غرائبي، وذلك انطلاقاً من عالم واقعي، وتأسيساً عليه.
ويبرع العقيلي في قصصه بملامسة عالم خشن وبارد وزاخر بالأفخاخ والمحظورات، وبطله كما يؤكد القاص يوسف ضمرة، متعدد الملامح والحالات، والمأزوم بالطبع، لا يحسن اختيار الوسيلة الملائمة للتغيير! ولكن... سيكون علينا أولاً أن ندقق في الأسباب الموجبة للتغيير المنشود. وعند هذه النقطة، تبرز قدرة العقيلي على بناء عالم عدائي... عالم كان هدفاً مرغوباً في الأصل، باعتباره خلاصاً من عالم ممجوج! إذاً، فنحن أمام محطات كلها كانت اختياراً خاطئاً، ولكن ما يحدث هو أن هذه الشخوص تطبّق المثل الإفريقي الذي يقول: "كمن يحفر حفرة ليخفي بترابها حفرة أخرى"!
