تطورت الأوبرا تاريخيّاً انطلاقاً من تلك المدائحيّات الدينية، حيث ظهرت بمبادرة من رجال الدين في الكنيسة الغربيّة جماعات منظمة، مهمتها تشكيل جوقة دينية لكل عيد، حيث يقام احتفال وفقا لتقاليد المدائحيين، وسميت هذه المجموعة من المؤلفات التي تنشدها هذه المجموعة باسم "المدائحيّات"، وكانت تعرض في البدء داخل الكنيسة، ويتم الحفل بأسلوب متعدد النغم، وبعض الجوقات، ثم جوقتان متناوبتان.
ولضرورات فنية تحولت المسرحية تدريجيا إلى باحات الكنائس، ثم إلى الساحات، وفي القرن الخامس عشر ظهرت المنصة بظهور التمثيليات الدينية ، وكانوا يستعملون مقاطع شعرية تتألف من ثمانية أبيات. يحكي كل مقطع منها جزء من القصة التي يدور حولها العرض.
