لم تدر بنفسها وهي تطوق صدره، وتهمس في فرح طغى على كل المشاعر الأخرى: محمد! -لم تنطقي اسمي هكذا من قبل. -أنت أفضل زوج في كل البلاد. -مع أنني من المماليك؟ -مع أنك من المماليك. سلط نظره إلى عينيها وقال: "زينب"، اصدقيني القول، ماذا يقول العامة عن المماليك؟ وإياك أن تكذبي. قالت في خضوغ: يحمون البلاد ويضحون بأنفسهم وحياتهم. ابتسم في تهكم ثم قال: وأهل مصر يفهمون هذا؟ يعرفون الأخطار؟ طأطأت رأسها ثم قالت: ربما لا يدركون سوى أخطار الوباء والفقر يا مولاي، للإدراك يوم وميعاد، مثله مثل الموت والميلاد ... الجهل يعمي البصيرة ويخرج الضغائن، ربما لو عرف أهل مصر المماليك أكثر لتلاشى الخوف...
