كان الملك لير وقتئذ عجوزا تجاوز الأعوام الثمانين ، وله ثلاث بنات ، لما شعر بأن الوقت قد حان ليتخفف من أعباء حكم مملكته بسبب تقدمه في العمر، فقرر أن يقسم المملكة بين بناته الثلاث على أن يتحدد نصيب كل منهن بحسب ما تقوله من كلمات تعبر عن حبها لأبيها .. وهكذا استدعى الملك بناته الثلاث وطلب من كل واحدة منهن أن تعبر عن مدى حبها له
