له نيف وثلاثون كتابا، منها كتاب (المعمرين - ط) و (النخلة - ط) و (ما تلحن فيه العامة) و (الشجر والنبات) و (الطير) و (الاضداد - ط) و (الوحوش) و (الحشرات) و (الشوق إلى الوطن) و (العشب والبقل) و (الفرق بين الآدميين وكل ذي روح) و (المختصر) في النحو على مذهب الاخفش وسيبويه.
وله شعر جيد .

من نوادر الأدب العربي. ويضم مجموعة تقييدات وتعليقات دونها أبو حاتم السجستاني من أجوبة شيخه الأصمعي على أسئلة ألقاها عليه. ثم زاد في تلك الأجوبة زيادات من عنده، وحذف منها ما شاء، فنسب الكتاب إليه كما نسب إلى الأصمعي. ويضم سجلاً من التقييمات لمجموعة كبيرة من الشعراء، تتخللها مقاييس متعددة للفحولة ينبغي أن تتحقق قبل إصدار الحكم على الشاعر بأنه فحل. فطفيل الغنوي فحل، لأنه غاية في النعت، ولبيد ليس بفحل، لأن شعره كالطيلسان الطبري، جيد الصنعة وليس له حلاوة. وكعب بن سعد فحل في مرثيته التي لا مثيل لها في الدني
