وقد وصفنا في كتابنا هذا "المروءة" على قدر ما بلغه بحثنا، واحتوى عليه فكرنا، وجعلناه حدودًا محدودة، ومعالم مقصورة، وشرائع بينة، وأبوابًا نيرة. وشريطتنا على قارئ كتابنا الإقصار عن طلب عيوب خطئنا، والصفح عن ما يقف عليه من إغفالنا، والتجاوز عن ما ينتهي إليه من إهمالنا، وإن أداه التصفح إلى صواب، نشره، أو إلى خطأ، ستره، لأنه قد تقدمنا بالإقرار، ولا بد للإنسان من زلل وعثار، وليس كل الأدب عرفناه، ولا كل علم دريناه، وعلينا في ذلك الاجتهاد، وإلى الله الإرشاد، وقل ما نجا مؤلف لكتاب من راصد بمكيدة، أو باحث عن خطيئة".
