في هذا الكتاب يقدم الدكتور علي الفتال قراءته الخاصة لـ (رباعيات الخيام) للشاعر المعروف عمر الخيام، متخذاً منهجاً مغايراً عن منهج من سبقه في قراءتهم للرباعيات كالصافي النجفي أو الصراف أو النجفي "فجعلت – كما يقول – رباعيتي من شطرين فحشوتين فشطر فحشوة ليكون مجموعهما ستة أسطر (...) وسبب اتخاذي المنهج هذا هو لكي أتوفّر على معاني رباعيات الخيام كلها بلا ضغطٍ أو حذفٍ أو تجريح، هذا أولاً. وثانياً لأجعل رباعيتي ذات إيقاعٍ موسيقي تستسيغه النفس ولا ملّه الأذن لما فيه من دفقٍ نابض بالحيوية ...". وعلى هذا حاول المؤلف في قراءته هذه أن يكون مُعرّباً وشاعراً في آن واحد فأسبغ الروح الشعرية على النص، مع الحفاظ عليه مبنى ومعنى، وقد اقترب من روح الخيام ومعانيه بروحٍ شعرية من غير تضحية بها وبالشعر وهذا ما يميّز نصه عن الآخرين.
هذا، وقد توزعت الرباعيات في هذا الكتاب على (200) مقطعاً شعرياً نقرأ منها:
" ، وإذا فاتك يومٌ من حساب الزمنِ ، دعه يمضي لا تفكر فيه كي لا تنثني ، إن ما قد فات فات ، لا تُرَع من كلِّ آت ، طِب – أخي الإنسان – نفساً وبذاك الطيب تهنأ ، ، لا تدع عُمرك يفنى ..."
