هو كتاب وضعه إبراهيم بن محمد البيهقي، أحد علماء المسلمين وأدبائهم الذين لم تحفظ تراجم حياتهم بصورة يستطاع معها معرفتهم معرفة كاملة،
بدأ المؤلف كتابه بالبسملة، ثم تناول أبحاثاً تاريخية تتعلق بتاريخ الإسلام تبين محاسن النبي والخلفاء الراشدين، ومحاسن السبق إلى الإسلام، ثم انتقل إلى مسائل اجتماعية فسرد محاسن الوفاء والشكران وغيرهما وذك ما يقابل المحاسن من المساوئ. وبعد أن انتهى من الكلام على الأمور التاريخية والاجتماعية، تناول بكلامه البلاغة والأدب والمناظرات الأدبية ومحاسن الشعراء ومساوئهم، ثم عاد قبل أن يختم أبحاثه إلى الاجتماعيات فتكلم على تأديب الولد، وبر الآباء بالأبناء وبرّ الأبناء للآباء والأمهات، ومساوئ العقوق، ومحاسن البنات ومساوئهن، وغير ذلك مما يدخل في هذا الباب، وختم كتابه في محاسن مزاج الشعراء، كل ذلك بأسلوب رائق مزج في بعض أبحاثه فيه الجدّ بهزل لطيف خفيف الروح يعجب القارئ ويستهويه ممّا يدل على أن صاحب الكتاب كان من رجال العلم والأدب والفكاهة. وأن تاريخ الآداب العربية قد بخسه حقه في سكوته عن ترجمة حياته ترجمة وافية.
