سفيان بن عيينة بن أبي عمران ميمون مولى محمد بن مزاحم الهلالي إمام ومحدث شهير وعرف بالزهد والورع. وقد ولد في الكوفة سنة 107 هـ وتوفي 198 هـ. أجمع الناس على صحة حديثه وروايته. طلب العلم وهو غلام وروى الحديث عن الكبار ومنهم: الزهري وأبي اسحق السبيعي وعمرو بن دينار ومحمد بن المنكدر وأبي الزناد وعاصم بن أبي النجود المقري والأعمش وعبد الملك بن عمير وغيرهم.
و روى عنه عدد كبير من العلماء الأجلاء والأئمة الكبار. منهم: الأعمش، وابن جريج، وشعبة بن الحجاج - وهؤلاء من شيوخه - وهمام بن يحيى، والحسن بن حي، وزهير بن معاوية، وحماد بن زيد، وإبراهيم بن سعد، وأبو إسحاق الفزاري، ومعتمر بن سليمان، وعبد الله بن المبارك، وعبد الرحمن بن مهدي، ويحيى القطان، والشافعي، وعبد الرزاق، والحميدي، وسعيد بن منصور، ويحيى بن معين، وعلي بن المديني، وإبراهيم بن بشار الرمادي، وأحمد بن حنبل، وأبو بكر بن أبي شيبة، ومحمد بن عبد الله بن نمير، وإسحاق بن راهويه وغيرهم خلق كثير.
