يدور هذا البحث حول رجل من أهل القرآن الكريم، ومن المنافحين عنه والداعين إليه على بصيرة ألا وهو (سفيان بن عيينة) الذي عاش حياة مبكرة في صدر الإسلام فاعتلى كرسي الإمامة في التفسير والحديث في مكة المكرمة خمسين سنة.
ومما أشيع خطأ أن شهرة سفيان بن عيينة كانت في الحديث، وأن اشتغاله بالتفسير كان جزءً من إشتغاله بالحديث وتبعاً له إلا أن هذه الدراسة أثبتت خلاف هذا القول، فلابن عيينة كتاب في التفسير مرتب حسب ترتيب المصحف ومنفصل تماماً عن الحديث، تميز به عن أهل زمانه وفاق فيه شيوخه وأقرانه حتى اعتبر منهجه في التفسير بداية مرحلة جديدة ونقطة تحول في المنهج الذي كان سائداً في عهد أتباع التابعين.
تتضمن هذه الدراسة تمهيداً وقسمين وملحقاً للتراجم ففي التمهيد ذكر المؤلف الأسباب التي دعته لإختيار هذا الموضوع، القسم الأول: ويتضمن أربعة أبواب تحدث في ثلاثة منها على معنى التفسير والتأويل ومذاهب العلماء في قبول التأويل ورده في مجال التفسير، ثم تناول تاريخ التفسير ومراحل تطوره من بداية عصر الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى نهاية القرن الثاني - تاريخ وفاة ابن عيينة.
أما القسم الثاني: ويتضمن ثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة وقسماً للتراجم، ففي الباب الأول منه بحث المؤلف في (تفسير ابن عيينة) ككاتب مؤلف منفصل عن الحديث، وفي الباب الثاني أدرج الروايات المنسوبة إلى ابن عيينة، أو التي جاءت من طريق ابن عيينة في التفسير ورتبها حسب ترتيب المصحف الشريف، وفي الباب الثالث: درس ابن عيينة كمفسر على ضوء ما صح عنه من روايات في علم التفسير.
