"قيس بن زريح"، الملقب بقيس لبنى، نسبة إلى محبوبته لبنى كان من العشاق العذريون الذين تفردوا بعشقهم عن سائر خلق الله، فتوحدوا بمحبوبة ولم يرضوا عنها بديلاً. أحب قيس لبنى وتزوج بها، ولكن حبه لوالديه وخوفه عليها جبره على طلاقها، فطلقها وعاش حياته حسرة وندماًً على ما بدر منه، وقد فرط بمن أحب، فلم يجد سبيلاًً للكلام سوى قول الشعر بمحبوبته لبنى التي أفنى عمره بحبها وإخلاصه لها ومات حسرةً لفراقها. وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع "عبد الرحمن المصطاوي" مختلف ما وقف عليه من قصائد حب والعشق التي رددها قيس بمعشوقته لبنى. شارحاً ما فيها من معانيها وما غمض من مفرداتها، ومرتباً الأشعار وبحسب القوافي على حروف المعجم، وضابطاً النص ضبطاً يكاد يكون تاماً، ومقدماً للقصائد بمقدمة هي بمثابة تعريف بالشاعر وبحياته وبأهم أخباره.
يختلط شعر قيس بن ذريع بشعر صنف معين من الشعراء هم الشعراءا لعشاق، خاصة العذرتين منهم، وعلى الأخص مجنون ليلى، فجميل بثينة، فابن الدمينة، فكُثَير عزة، فعروة بن حزام، وتبدو ظاهرة الاختلاط هذه في شعر قيس أكثر وضوحاً من شعر أي شاعر سواه حتى يكاد عدد المقطوعات التي نُسبت لقيس وغيره يساوي عدد المقطوعات والقصائد التي لم تُنسب إلا لقيس وحده.
وقد قُسمت اشعار قيس في هذا الديوان لى قسمين: قسم لا ينازعه فيها شاعر آخر، جُعل في القسم الأول (الديوان) وقسم يتنازعه قيس وغيره وجُعل في صلة الديوان.
