تدعونا هذه الرواية إلى رحلة في الدروب المتشابكة للمجتمع الجزائري الجديد، وذلك من خلال شخصية المهدي و « أصحاب الناقة »، في مشاهد تمزج بين الواقع والخيال. يبحث المهدي عن « مُعجزته » التي ستمنحه « المفاتيح السحرية » لتغيير العالم، كما حدث في زمن مضى مع مثله الأعلى ابن تومَرْت الذي نصّب نفسه إمام المَهدية المنتظَر، بعد أن حقّق معجزته التي طالما بحث عنها هو الآخر. إذ تمكّن من إنطاق الموتى... المَهدي أيضا سيحقّق معجزته، ولكن في ظروف أقل ما يقال عنها أنّها ملغومة ومثيرة لجدل قد يُبطلها. الحكاية حكايتان : حكاية المهدي وأصحابه وحكاية أفراد عائلته المضطربة : أمّه نايلَة وابنتها ليلى، الشيخ امبارَك، المجاهد اعْمَر كرّوش دون أن ننسى الصديقين المتهوِّرَين عبد القادر وموسى. شخصيات أخرى تشارك في المأساة الكبرى، محلِّقة بأحلامها وأوهامها واستيهاماتها الخارقة. رواية تعجّ بالصخب والعنف، والضوضاء والغضب، وهي رحلة لجّية في أعماق الواقع الوهمي، حيث تصطدم الأحلام الأكثر جنونا مع الأقدار الأكثر مأساوية.
