في بعض سنوات الحرب، شهدت في الجامعة المصرية، قبل ضمها إلى وزارة المعارف، حفلة جمعت جمهرة من شباب العلم، وخطب فيها طائفة من كبار الأدباء وكبار الأساتذة.
وكان يجري على ألسنة الخطباء ذكر أئمة النهضة الحديثة في مصر، في فروعها المختلفة من سياسية واجتماعية وعلمية، فتهتف الجموع، ويبلغ حماس الشباب أقصاه، حتى إذا جرى ذكر الشيخ محمد عبده خفت هنالك صوت الشباب، وفترت حدة الهاتفين.
انصرفت يومئذ حسيرًا محزونًا، أكاد أتهم بقلة الوفاء بلدًا ينسى فيه فضل الشيخ محمد عبده بعد سنين، لكن عتبي على شبابنا كان ممزوجًا برحمة؛ لأنهم لم يعرفوا من أمر الرجل شيئًا يغريهم بأن يحبوه، ويقدروه حق قدره. ولعل قصارى ما كان يعرف طلاب العلم في ذلك العهد من أمر الإمام أنه كان شيخًا مكروهًا هو وآراؤه من الشيوخ، كما يكره الشيوخ المنار وصاحب المنار تلميذ الإمام.
ملأت هذه الخواطر نفسي، ودفعتني إلى الخطابة والكتابة في سيرة الشيخ محمد عبده، وما يتصل بسيرته وآثاره ووجهته في الإصلاح.
كانت أنشئت في تلك الأيام جامعة الشعب، نهض لإنشائها الكونت ده بروزور المندوب الروسي في صندوق الدين، وكان رجلًا فاضل النفس، سامي المقاصد، وجيهًا، من كبار أهل العلم والأدب، وقد جمع إليه ثلة من الأجانب، وثلة من المصريين؛ لينظموا محاضرات ودراسات ليلية بلغات شتى تيسر الثقافة العالية والذوق الفني لمن تعوقهم أعمالهم في الحياة عن متابعة دراسة منظمة في معاهد عالية، وتيسر أيضًا الاتصال الفكري والذوقي بين الأجانب والمصريين.
ونجحت جامعة الشعب نجاحًا عجيبًا، ولما خرج الكونت ده بروزور من مصر، وقامت ثورة سنة 1919، تعطلت جامعة الشعب، وطوى الدهر ذكرها.
