إن حدود الحركة الإسلامية الحداثية وإن كانت غير بَيِّنَةِ المعالم إلا إن جوهرها واضح؛ حيث ضمّت بعض الشخصيات المهمة التي مثّلت القوى الجاذبة للمفكرين الإسلاميين في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وفي القرن العشرين؛ أمثال جمال الدين الأفغاني ومحمد عبده ومحمد رشيد رضا، بالإضافة إلى الرواد الإقليميين مثل: سيد أحمد خان ونامق كمال وإسماعيل غاسبرينسكي وغيرهم كثير.
يشمل هذا الكتاب نماذج من الكتابات المؤثرة لهؤلاء الكتّاب - تم إختيارها على أساس الأثر والتنوع - ويسعى إلى إلقاء الضوء عليها، كما يذكر بعض أساليب الكتابات المتنوعة ويشمل كذلك المقالات الصحافية والرسائل العلمية والأدب الهادف من مختلف الأنواع، ومن بينها حوارات وقصص ومسرحيات وقصائد... إلخ.
يعرض الكتاب أربع قضايا تناقشها كتابات الحركة الإسلامية الحداثية، وجميعها تدور في إطار حرية التعبير، وإن القضية الفكرية الرئيسة للحركة كانت هي حق قول الجديد في خطاب إسلامي.
ومن أجل الدفاع عن القيم الجديدة كان على الحداثيين تأييد حقّ الدفاع عن هذه القيم، وقد فعلوا هذا بالجوع إلى التحديات التي أثارها هجوم الحداثة، والفرص التي أتاحتها، وذلك بالقول بأن تعليمهم - غير التقليدي - يؤهّلهم للحديث عن القضايا الإسلامية بأنماط جديدة من أساليب الخطاب، وأخيراً بوضع تصوّرهم الجديد والحديث عن الإسلام.
وتظلّ هذه الإشكاليات تواجه المسلمين مِمَّن يجب أَنْ يقرنوا القيم الجديدة بالخطاب الإسلامي.
