في نحو سنة 1938 طُلب مني أن أكتب سلسلة مقالات في مجلة الإذاعة فاحترت في اختيار موضوع تتعاقب مقالاته، وبعد ذلك هداني تفكيري إلى أن أكتب سلسلة مقالات في العادات والتقاليد المصرية بعنوان دائرة المعارف المصرية أرتبها حسب حروف الهجاء، فبدأت بحرف الألف، وبدأت من حرف الألف بالإبرة أذكر على الأخص عقائد المصريين فيها والأمثال التي قيلت فيها، واستمررت على ذلك نحو أربع عشرة مقالة ولما يَنْتَهِ حرف الألف، ثم شاء القدر أن أُختار عميدًا لكلية الآداب سنة 1939 فنصحني بعضهم ألا أستمر في هذه المقالات؛ لأنها تتنافى مع جلال العمادة، مع أنها كانت في اعتقادي أجل من عميد.
ومضت السنون وتركت العمادة، وأخيرًا في نحو سنة 1948 سألني سائل: هل كتبت في مجموع مقالاتك هذه شيئًا عن أبي علي وأم علي وما معناهما؟ فأجبته، وهاجني ذلك إلى أن أتم ما بدأت فأخذت أجمع الماضي وأكمله، واستغرق مني ذلك نحو أربع سنين، ورأيت صعوبات كثيرة في هذا الموضوع فلم أكن أعتمد إلا على الذاكرة غالبًا، وساعدني أني تربيت في حارة بلدية تكثر فيها العادات والتقاليد، وقد منحني الله ذاكرة طيبة حفظت ما كان يجري أمامها حتى مع التقدم في السن، فأخذت أستذكر ما مضى، وكلما ذكرت عادة أو كلمة قيدتها من غير ترتيب حتى إذا تمت اجتهدت في ترتيبها، وعرفت إذ ذاك فضل الخليل بن أحمد لما بدأ يجمع معجمه «العين» لا عن مثال يحتذيه وسلك في ذلك مسلكًا دقيقًا بوضع الكلمة حسب مخارج الحروف وحذف المهمل منها، ولكني لم أفعل ذلك بل اكتفيت بتقييد ما أذكره.
ثم رأيت أن كلمة «دار المعارف»، كلمة فخمة لا تتناسب وهذا الكتاب فتواضعت وسميته «قاموس العادات والتقاليد المصرية».
